Well, that sure was fun! Last night our CEO, Tayfun Bilsel joined the CIMA Cambridge branch’s annual Entrepreneurial Panel event moderated by CIMA’s own Chair EMEA, Carolyn Rand and fellow panelist Dr Shailendra Vyakarnam from Cambridge University.

These three “battle” tested entrepreneurs were remarkable to learn from to a well designed (and participated in) session. Oozing through each statement was their immensely deep experience in starting, growing, and scaling businesses. Hidden behind the attendee questions revealed what some may say were sparks of desire to jump into the adventure for themselves - if they hadn’t already joined ventures to start developing first-hand experience.

As a bit of background, are some context setting before we share the meat of the conversation:

What is the CIMA?

Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) is the world’s largest and leading professional body of management accountants. Their mission is to help people and businesses to succeed in the public and private sectors. They have more than 229,000 members and students in 176 countries. Their members and students work at the heart of business in industry, commerce and not-for-profit organisations.

Why was Clinked invited?

Did you know that Clinked launched in a public beta in summer 2011? Yes, that’s right - and after 6 months of testing, it went live in 2012. That means for 8 years the product you love to connect your client facing team with clients in a branded, secure and mobile client portal has been evolving. Thanks for all our clients over the years (including our own team), it’s been getting stronger & most robust. Crazy to think right?!

Tayfun joined the panel to share knowledge developed since first starting Rabbitsoft (yes, that’s our formal name) in 2008 - that’s 11 years of entrepreneurial blood, sweat and tears! And this isn’t his first rodeo as they say in the USA.

How do Clinked & Management Accountants sync?

As any tested entrepreneur will confess (some may take a little pressing to admit), user adoption and market research help products and services evolve over time. Clinked has been an industry agonistic tool since its inception - any industry where teams interact with outside parties to get a service out, Clinked is your tool! Management Accountants have been strong adopters of Clinked whether working internally or servicing clients.

Back to what you came here for - the key insights from these entrepreneurs.

Over the course of the evening, it was remarkable to listen to them continually coming back through their stories to key characteristics one needs when jumping in. They laughed at their own actions when asked if one needs to be stubborn to get a business off the ground. Each blushed a bit about the challenge of getting out of their own comfort zone when asking for feedback on ideas from complete strangers. The remaining impact of struggles of letting team members go or keeping a business afloat when cash flows stops could be seen on their expressions.

Through all they shared, the following 5 key characteristics came through for those attendees to look to develop as needed skills for those embarking on an entrepreneurial journey

  • Resilience
  • Agility
  • Long term vision
  • Ability to build trust
  • Confidence

This last - confidence - was a hot topic. They asserted that confidence is not about being the loudest in the room, ensuring your opinion is the only one that counts, or charisma.

Thanks to CIMA’s Cambridge chapter from all of us at Clinked for the invitation to participate. It was such fun listening to our founder discuss the journey of Clinked with such remarkable panelists!
